The Callie Cable Hat

Hello Friends!

This is a quick post today. I would like to just share the Callie Cable hat with you. A beautiful spring/summer hat with an interesting cable motif on the side. 

 

 

 

  

 Only a couple of notes before you get started:

  •  Please read the notes for the pattern carefully. Each round is ended by a join, and each new round started in that first stitch. This is important to keep the cable nice and straight. 
  • Please make sure you have the right gauge. As you probably know, not all sport weight yarn is the same. It is important to adjust your hook to the yarn you are using so the hat turns out the right size. 

 

And with that, here goes:

 

Sizes:

Toddler (18-19” head circumference)

Child (20-21” head circumference)

Adult (22-23” head circumference)

 

Notes:

  • The chain at the beginning does not count as a stitch
  • Join to the first stitch after every round and put your first stitch into the same stitch as the join

 

Materials:

  • #2/Sport weight yarn. Sample was made with Schachenmayr Catania (125m/50g) (1, 1, 2 skeins)
  • F/3.75mm

 

Gauge: 10dc/6rows in 2”

 

Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

St(s) – Stitch(es)

Dc – Double Crochet

Tr – Trebble

Slst – Slip Stitch

Fpdc – Front Post Double Crochet

MR – Magic Ring

 

Cable Motif:

This is the stitch sequence for each round in the cable motif. It is worked over 19 sts. Work round according to instructions, then work this sequence when instructions read “CABLE” then keep working on the round according to the instructions for each size.

 

Cable Pattern:

1Fpdc in next st, 1dc in next st, skip next 3 sts, 1tr into each of next 3 sts, then going behind the 3tr made, work 1tr into each st that was skipped. 1dc into next st, 1fpdc into next st, 1dc into next st. Skip next 3 sts, put 1tr into each of next 3 sts, then going in front of 3tr made, work 1tr into the skipped three stitches. CAREFULL, not to catch the trebbles made.*  1dc in next st, 1fpdc in next st.

 

*To be able to work in front of the trebbles, you will have to put in your hook as usual, then bring it forward in front of your trebbles, keeping the yarn in front of your work for this step, finish stitch as usual. The pictures show the hook and yarn in front of the work. It’s a bit tricky, but possible J

Make a MR.

 

  1. ch2, 12dc into MR, join to first dc (12)
  2. ch2, 2dc into each dc, join (24)
  3. ch2, (dc in next st, 2dc in next st) around, join (36)
  4. ch2, (dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) around, join (48)
  5. ch2, (dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st) around, join (60)
  6. ch2, (dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st) around, join (72)
  7. ch2, (dc in next 5 sts, 2 dc in next st) around, join (84)
  8. ch2, dc in next 17 sts, CABLE, dc in next 48 sts, join

 

Repeat round 8 ten times or until the desired length of the hat is reached.

 

 

Child:

 

Make a MR.

 

  1. ch2, 12dc into MR, join to first dc (12)
  2. ch2, 2dc into each dc, join (24)
  3. ch2, (dc in next st, 2dc in next st) around, join (36)
  4. ch2, (dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) around, join (48)
  5. ch2, (dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st) around, join (60)

Repeat row 10 twelve times or until the desired length of the hat is reached.

 

Finishing for all sizes:

 

Slst in each st around LOOSELY, join.

Cut yarn and weave in all the ends.

Valentines Day is less than three weeks away! Two and one half weeks to be exact. So we decided to give you a little present early. The new Sandy Sweetheart spring hat pattern!

I am a total fan of spring hats. They are a great accessory to any spring,summer or even fall outfit, and provide just that little protection when it is still cool, but not cold enough for a winter hat. You can make it out of a cotton yarn for a lightweight “last touch”, or even wool if you want a bit more warmth still. 

The Sandy Sweetheart is such a quick and easy project, and the heart is made up separately so you can choose where and how to place it, or if you want to just leave it out.

And even though spring is still far, far away where we live, this hat starts off the spring in my “Year of Hats”. You don’t want to miss the next ones, so sign up and get emails every time a new pattern is released 🙂

After you have finished your last sc round, join, turn, and work slst in each stitch around. Join, cut yarn, weave in all ends, you’re done! 

Heart:

 

  1. Ch3, sc into first chain, turn (3)

 

  1. Ch1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next, 2sc in last, turn (5)
  2. Ch1, 2 sc in fist st, sc in next3, 2sc in last, turn (7)
  3. Ch1, 2sc in first st, sc in next 5, 2sc in last, turn (9)

 

Continue in this manner until you have 15 sts. You should have 7 rows

  1. Ch1, sc in each st across, turn

9.-14. Repeat row 8 five more times.

 

After that:

 

  1. a) Ch1, skip first st, sc in next 6, turn (this is your front side. Put a stitch marker on this side of the heart so you remember)

Ch1, sk first st, sc in next 5, turn

Ch1, sk first st, sc in next 4, turn

Ch1, sk first, sc in next 3, bind off

 

  1. b) Attach yarn in the middle space on the last full row on the right side

Sk next st, sc in next 6, turn

Ch1, sk first st, sc in next 5, turn

Ch1, sk first st, sc in next 4, turn

Ch1, sk first, sc in next 3 , DO NOT BIND OFF, turn

 

Edging:

 

  1. Ch1, sc in each stitch and row around the whole heart (right side facing), putting three sc in bottom tip of the heart and sc2tog in the top middle, where the rounds meet. Join to first sc, turn
  1. WS(Ch3, sc in BLO of next st, ch3, sc in FLO of next st.) repeat around heart, join into first sc of row below. Bind off and weave in ends.

Placing the Heart:

 

Lay the hat in front of you with the seam at the back, then fold backwards, enclosing the seam in the fold. The front right and left quarters should be facing. Pick one of them, this is the right placement for your heart. Use a whipstitch to sew it in place, just inside the frill edge.

The Ariel Hat

It is week three of our Year of Hats, and I now feel confident enough to tell you about this idea. Every week for this whole year, you will find a new hat pattern on this blog for FREE! Some weeks it will be an amazing pattern with lots of detail that took me weeks to put together (like this week’s), and some weeks it might be a simple one, that works up quickly. Some weeks it might even be a head band or some other form of head covering. But I can tell you right now, that each one will be a labor of love. If I don’t love it, I don’t share it. And spoiler alert: texture and interesting stitches will be a definite requirement for most of them. Crochet can be a beautiful craft with stunning results, and I have made it my mission to prove that.

 

If I am completely honest, this whole project scares me. A year is a very long time. 52 weeks, if I paid attention at school. But each one of those weeks just fly by! Already, we are almost 1/12 done in 2019.

But I am also really, REALLY excited and cannot wait to see where this year takes us. If all goes well, we will have 52 unique hat patterns on this blog by the end of this year. That is mindblowing! So, here goes. Enjoy! 

Materials:

DK weight or light worsted weight yarn. Sample was made with Austermann Merino 105 (2-3 skeins)

I have also made it with KnitPicks City Tweed DK and with Gloss DK and both work up beautifully as well. (You will only need 2 skeins of these.)

3.5mm and 4.5mm crochet hooks

 

Finished hat measurements:

Toddler (18-19” head circumference)

Child (20-21” head circumference)

Adult (22-23” head circumference)

 

Gauge: Band: 9sc in 2” Body: 6tpsc in 2”

 

Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

St(s) – Stitch(es)

Sc – Single Crochet

Sc2tog – Single Crochet 2 Together

Ppsc – Modified Single Crochet

 

Special Stitch: PPSC

This stitch is basically a modified Single Crochet stitch. Instead of working the stitch into the stitch below, you will be working it through the “v” that the post of the stitch below from right to left. Then finish like the sc. The pictures indicate where to put your hook through.

Notes:

  • This hat is crocheted in the round. You will not join to the first stitch.
  • This hat is designed to be fitted.
  • If you would like to add/subtract stitches for a bigger/smaller hat, make sure you end up with an uneven number of stitches in the body.
  • Crochet LOOSELY in the body! Especially the sc, otherwise it will be hard to make the ppsc stitches.
  • The decrease rounds are simple sc decreases. After lots of trial and error, this is the simplest method and with the gathered top, you will not be able to see the stitches. Therefore, no need for complicated decrease rounds. 

 

Instructions:

Band:

With 3.5 mm chain 80, 90, 100, join in the round. Make sure not to twist the chain.

  1. Sc in each ch around. DO NOT JOIN! You will be working the hat in continuous rounds. (A stitch marker will help you know where the new round starts.)
  2. – 5. (6, 7) sc in each st around.

Body:

Switch to 4.5mm hook

  1. Toddler: (sc in next 9 sts, 2 sc inc.in next) 7x, sc in next 10 . (87) Make sure to not crochet this row too tight

Child: (sc in next 9 sts, 2sc inc. in next) 9x.(99)

Adult: (sc in next 9 sts, 2 sc inc. in next) (9x) sc in next 10. (109)

  1. (sc in next st., ppsc in next st. ) around
  2. (ppsc in next st., sc in next ) around

Repeat rows 2-3 until hat measures 6.5”, 7 “, 7.5”, or to desired length.

Decrease:

  1. (sc in next 3, sc2tog)x 17, 19, 21, sc to end of row (70, 80, 88)
  2. (sc in next 2, sc2tog)x 17(for toddler size: sc in last 2 sts), 20, 22 (53, 60, 66)
  3. (sc in next, sc2tog)x 17 (sc in last 2 sts), 20, 22 (36, 40, 44)
  4. (sc2tog) x 18, 20, 22

Cut yarn with a long tail. Weave in the tail through the remaining stitches, pull hole closed and secure yarn inside the hat.

Finishing:

Turn hat upside down with right side facing. With 3.5mm hook join yarn to the band, sc around, join and bind off.

Weave in all ends.

 

Attach 3-4 inch pompom.

The Jasmin Hat

It is a cold day up here in the north, so we are bundling up and staying inside. Seems fitting that I have a winter hat pattern to share with you.

 

The Jasmin hat is created with bulky weight yarn and a tight texture, making this a beautiful hat that still provides warmth. I added a strand of KnitPicks Curio lace weight yarn to it to it match the pompom. This does not really add to the weight so you can choose to do this for an interesting effect, or not. 🙂 Little Miss Z. loves her hat, wears it at all temperatures and gets lots of compliments for it.

 

So, here goes:

 

 

 

Sizes:

Toddler (18-19” head circumference)

Child (20-21” head circumference)

Adult (22-23” head circumference)

Gauge: 7rows/5sts in 2” of the body

Materials:

  • Bulky yarn, I used KnitPicks Brava in color Cobblestone Heather (1, 1, 2) balls
  • 6mm , 7mm hooks

 

Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

St – Stitch

Hdc – Half Double Crochet

Slst – Slip Stitch

Blo – Back Loop Only

Hdc2tog – Half Double Crochet 2 Together

Slst2tog – Slip Stitch 2 Together

 

Slst2tog: put hook into the front loop of next 2 stitches, yarn over, pull through both loops and loop on hook. (If you have another way of doing it, go for it. This is what I did)

 

Notes:

  •  This hat is designed for a fitted look. If you would like a slouchy hat, repeat rows in pattern where indicated (*)
  • When doing slst, remember to do so loosely, it is easy to make them too tight
  • When crocheting the body, make sure you put hdc into hdc and slst into slst always
  • Except when decreasing. When you (hdc2tog), you will join a hdc and a slst into one hdc; when you (slst2tog), you will join a slst and a hdc into one slst.
  • Always join into first stitch of the row
  • This hat is NOT crocheted in rows, please remember to turn after each row.

 

Instructions:

Band:

With smaller hook, ch 5, 6, 8

  1. Sc in second chain and each ch across.
  2. Ch1, turn, sc in first st, sc in BLO of next (2, 3, 5) sts, sc in last

Rep. row 2 until you have (56, 64, 72) rows.

 

Fold band in half and join last crocheted row to base row by slst the front loops to base chain across. Turn band right side out so you work on the outside of the hat.

     

 

Body:

Switch to bigger hook.

 

 

 

 

Ch1, sc into each row of the band. Join (56, 64, 72 sts) (put a stitch marker into the first stitch of each row from now on)

  1. Ch1, turn (slst into next st, hdc into next st) repeat around, join
  2. Ch1, turn (hdc into next st, slst into next st) repeat around, join

NOTE: you have to make sure that you put hdc into hdc and slst into slst!

Repeat rows 2-3 (5, 6, 7) times, repeat row 2 one more time. Hat including band should be about (4.5- 5”, 5.5-6”, 6.5-7”) long. *If you want more slouch, keep repeating rows 2+3 a couple more times, but be sure to end on a row 2.

 

Decrease:

  1. Ch1, turn, slst in first st, (hdc2tog, slst2tog, hdc, slst, hdc, slst) 6, 7, 8 times, hdc2tog, slst2tog, hdc, slst, hdc, join (42, 48, 54)
  2. Repeat row 3 of the body
  3. Ch1, turn, slst in first st, (hdc2tog, slst2tog, hdc, slst) 6, 7, 8 times, hdc2tog, slst2tog, hdc (28, 32, 36)
  4. Rep row 3 of the body
  5. Ch1, turn, (hdc2tog, slst2tog) 7, 8, 9 times (14, 16, 18)

Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Weave yarn through the last worked row and pull to close hole. Attach pompom.

 Happy New Year friends! It is still January, so it still counts, right? How many and which New Years resolutions have you set for yourself? For me, I want to spend more effort on achieving my goals. Classic, right. I know. But one of these goals is to share more free patterns with y’all, and that is a noble thing, some would say.

For your first freebie, here is the Jill Slouch!

Sizes:

Toddler, Child, Adult. This pattern is easily adjustable by adding/subtracting rows when you do the band.

Gauge:

17sts/18rows in 4” in band (stretch a bit before measuring)

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn, Knipicks Brava was used here.
  • 5.00mm crochet hook

Abbreviations:

  • Ch – Chain
  • St – Stitch
  • Slst – Slip Stitch
  • Sc – Single Crochet
  • Dc – Double Crochet
  • Sk – Skip
  • Rev.sc – Reversed Single Crochet
  • BLO – Back Loop Only
  • FLO – Front Loop Only

Reversed Single Crochet: It is exactly like a single crochet, but you are going backwards on your work (from left to right). Enter hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops.

Notes:

  • If your gauge is bigger, you will have a bigger hat with more slouch; if you have a tighter gauge, you will have a very fitted hat. You might consider adding rows on the band and in the body of the hat in that case.
  • When you are making the body, make sure you put the rev.sc into the FLO of the dc row below. The next dc row goes into the back loops of the dc row before.

Band:

Ch 20, 23, 26

  1. Sc in 2nd chain and each chain to the end.
  2. Ch1, turn, sc in 1st st, sc in BLO of each st until 1 st remains, sc in last st.

Repeat row 2 until you have 70, 75, 80 rows.

NOTE: To make this hat wider/narrower, add or remove rows here. To get the perfect fit, fold the band lengthwise and wrap it around your head. Please consider that the yarn will stretch out over time and the fit will become looser.

Join the last row to the beginning chain. To do this, fold your work so that your beginning chain and your last worked row are on top of each other. Then, slst these two together. To reduce bulk here, join only the outer loop of the row to the chain.

Body:

You might want to use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round. Because the reversed sc goes “backwards”, you will not be crocheting in a continuous round and not turn your work. Your band stays unfolded.

Ch1

  1. Sc in each row of the band, join in first sc (pic1) (70, 75, 80) sts
  2. Ch2, dc in each st around, join
  3. Ch1, rev.sc in FLO in each st around, join (pic2)

Repeat rows (2-3) 3, 4, 4 more times, putting the rev.sc into FLO and the dc rows into BLO of the previous dc row.

NOTE: If you want more slouch to the beanie, add rows 2-3 a few more times here.

Then:

  1. ch2, (dc in next 3 sts, dc2tog)repeat around, join (56, 60, 64)
  2. ch1, rev.sc in FLO around, join
  3. ch2, dc around, join
  4. ch1, rev.sc in FLO around, join
  5. ch2, (dc in next 6 sts, dc2tog) repeat around, join

NOTE: The child sized hat will end the decreasing rows in a dc, instead dc2tog. (49, 53, 56)

  1. ch1, rev.sc in FLO around, join
  2. ch2, (dc in next 5 sts, dc2tog) repeat around, join (42, 46, 48)
  3. repeat row 6.
  4. ch2, dc in each st, join

For size child and adult, repeat row 8-9 one more time.

Cut your yarn with a long tail, weave the tail back and forth through all the sts, and pull the opening closed. On the inside, secure with a few sts. Weave in all the ends, attach pompom, and fold up the band.
