Happy Friday, Everyone!

We are entering spring break over here, and I am actually pretty excited to just spend a week at home with the kids! Although, I noticed yesterday that cleaning and sorting the kid’s playroom cannot be delayed any longer. Much to my dismay, as this is my least favourite chore!

First, however, we have a full fun day planned tomorrow with an epic breakfast, movie, games, and all that fun. We are all looking forward to that!

Last week when we were “down south” (if anywhere in Canada could be considered as “south”), we finally visited Wolseley Wool, a local yarn store that sells a lot of locally sourced/dyed yarn.

Guys, I thought I was in yarn-heaven! After a long time of touching and squishing all the yarns, trying not to look like a weirdo, I finally decided on a pack of Darling Sock mini skeins by Blossom & Fern Yarn Co. It is such a beautiful merino wool/nylon blend yarn, and I had to start working it up right away, lest it sits on my shelf forever, because it is too pretty to use!

This hat design had been on my mind for a while and was just waiting for the perfect yarn. So, when I found the B&F sock yarn, I immediately knew it was meant to become this hat!

It is a simple design with a beautiful texture that lets the colours of this yarn just shine, don’t you agree? The airy lightness of the fabric paired with the fingering weight merino wool makes this the perfect hat for spring or fall (or winter, if you don’t live in Canada. LOL).

So, here goes:

Sizes:

Toddler (18-19” head circumference)

Child (20-21” head circumference)

Adult (22-23” head circumference)

Gauge: 12dc/6rows in 2”

Materials:

Yarn: Sock weight yarn. Sample was made in Blossom and Fern Darling Sock (80% merino wool/20% nylon); 177yrds/50g); 50-75 grams

Hooks: 3.5mm

Other: Darning needle to weave in the ends

Abbreviations:

 Ch – Chain(s)

St(s) – Stitch(es)

Sk – Skip Stitch

Sc – Single Crochet

Dc2tog – Double Crochet two Stitches Together

Dc – Double Crochet

Slst – Slip Stitch

Blo – Back Loop Only

2cdc – 2 Crossed Double Crochet

2cdc:

Skip 2 sts, 1 dc into next st, ch1, 1dc into 1st of the 2 skipped sts, working back over last dc worked.

Notes:

  • Please measure the band before continuing on to the body of the hat. The number of rows needed depend on gauge and material. With wool, you will need fewer rows because it is very stretchy. At the same time with acrylic yarns, you might need more as it is not as stretchy. Pull band slightly when measuring to make sure it will fit.
  • The beginning chain counts as a stitch in the body of the hat (not the band)
  • Join to the 3rd loop of the chain after every round
  • When working the body of the hat, work the first stitch after the join into the next stitch, not the base of the chain

Instructions:

Band:

Ch 6, 7, 8

Row 1:          sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 4, 5, 6 ch, turn

Row 2:         ch1, sc in first sc, sc in blo of next 3, 4, 5 sc, sc in last sc, turn

Repeat row 2 until your band measures 15”, 17”, 19”; approximately (96, 108, 124) rows, ending with an even number of rows. If using wool, stretch a bit before measuring, as it is extremely stretchy and will become looser with wear.

Fold band in half and align last worked row with base chain.

Ch1, slst together blo of each st with remaining loops of the base chain. Turn the seam inside and start working the body of the hat with the right side of the band facing.

Body:

Round 1:       ch3, dc into the end of each row of the band, join to 3rd ch of beginning ch. (96, 108, 124 dc) DO NOT TURN

Round 2:       ch3, (2cdc over next 3 sts, 1dc into next st) repeat around, ending with a 2cdc, join.

Round 3:       ch3, (dc into next st, dc into ch, dc into next 2 sts) repeat around, join (96, 108, 124 dc)

Repeat rounds 2-3 until hat including band measures about 6.5”, 7”, 7.5”, ending with a “row 2” (16, 18, 20 rounds).

Decrease:

Toddler:

Round 1:       Ch3, dc into next st, dc2tog, (dc into next 2 sts , dc2tog) repeat around, join (72 dc)

Round 2:       Ch3, (2cdc over next 3 sts, dc into next sts) repeat around, ending with a 2cdc, join

Round 3:       Ch3, dc2tog, (dc into next st, dc2tog) repeat around, join (48 dc)

Round 4:       Ch3, (2cdc over next 3 sts, dc into next sts) repeat around, ending with a 2cdc, join

Round 5:       Ch3, (dc2tog) around until 1 st remains, sk1, join (24dc)

Round 6:       Ch3, (2cdc over next 3 sts, dc into next sts) repeat around, ending with a 2cdc, join. *

Round 2:       Ch3, (2cdc over next 3 sts, dc into next sts) repeat around, ending with a dc, join

Round 3:       Ch3, dc2tog, (dc into next st, dc2tog) repeat around, join (54 dc)

Round 4:       Ch3, (2cdc over next 3 sts, dc into next sts) repeat around until 5sts remain, 2cdc, dc in next, sk next, join

Round 5:       Ch3, (dc2tog) around until 1 st remains, sk1, join (27dc)

Round 6:       Ch3, (2cdc over next 3 sts, dc into next sts) repeat around until 2 sts remain, dc in next, sk next, join *

Round 1:       Ch3, dc into next st, dc2tog, (dc into next 2 sts , dc2tog) repeat around, join (93 dc)

Round 2:       Ch3, (2cdc over next 3 sts, dc into next sts) repeat around, ending with a dc, join

Round 3:       Ch3, dc2tog, (dc into next st, dc2tog) repeat around, join (62 dc)

Round 4:       Ch3, (2cdc over next 3 sts, dc into next sts) repeat around until 5sts remain, 2cdc, dc in next, sk next, join

Round 5:       Ch3, (dc2tog) around until 1 st remains, sk1, join (31dc)

Round 6:       Ch3, (2cdc over next 3 sts, dc into next sts) repeat around until 2 sts remain, dc in next, sk next, join *
