Happy Monday, Friends!
A new week, a new free pattern! And it is a good one this time! Something you might have never seen or done before. Are you up for learning a new skill?
I am really loving all the two-toned brioche knit things I have been seeing lately, and again, wanted to recreate the look with crochet! There are a few crocheters who tried to dabble in it already, and of course, I have to get in on that, too!
If I ever start up knitting again, it would be to make all things brioche! It is just stunning! And while the crochet brioche doesn’t look exactly like the knit counterpart, I am really excited about the effect that this technique creates with two colours of yarn.

May I present: The Brie Brioche Hat!
An introductory pattern into the brioche crochet technique with an interesting, yet simple design that is perfect for your first crochet brioche project.
I will be honest with you and say that it was really tricky to write this pattern with a picture tutorial and describe everything so it would be easy to understand. The thing is, once you get how to increase and decrease, the rest is EASY! Really! And because I really want everyone to be able to make this hat and learn this crochet technique, I have made a video showing (in a lot of detail, many repetitions, and maybe a few too many words) how to make it.
This is my first ever video tutorial, and I am super nervous about it. So, please don’t judge me too harshly! 🙂 It is a long one, so don’t say you haven’t been warned. LOL
And here goes the written pattern:
To Fit Sizes: Finished Size*:
Toddler (18-19” head circumference) 16” circumference / 7” height
Child (20-21” head circumference) 18” circumference / 7.5” height
Adult (22-23” head circumference) 20”circumference / 8.5” height
*The fabric of this hat will be stretchy, therefore, it is designed with at about 2” negative ease in the width. It will have a nice snug fit. If you would like a longer hat, just keep working rows in the body until the desired length is reached before decreasing.
Materials:
Yarn: Worsted weight; Sample was made with KnitPicks Brava (100% Acrylic) (218 yards/100g);
1 skein of each
Hooks: I/5.50mm or size needed to obtain gauge.
Gauge: 6 rows/8sts in 2”

Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain
St(s) – Stitch(es)
Sc – Single Crochet
Sk – Skip (…) Stitch(es)
Tr –
Fptr – Front Post
Notes:
- The Brioche Stitch is worked in two
colors , that are worked one at a time to create the Brioche look - Always work on the right side of the fabric, the
color that is being worked is worked overtop the last row always (This can be seen in the pictures in the tutorial) - ALWAYS work your rows into the same
color rows below (the othercolored row will be resting in the back) - After round 2, the beginning chain will be on the back, but the first
st and all stitches will be at the front of your work. This gives the hat a nice finish. - Rows 4 & 5 of the body pattern are the same, just reverse
colors .
